No One to Blame
"Take your life in your own hands and what happens? A terrible thing: no one to blame."
Erica Jong
Life is easier when failures and unfinished business are someone else's fault.
Children are fabulous excuses for missed careers. Illness (often imagined) is a good apology for missed deadlines. The weather is our reason for the poor state of our health.
Then you hear stories of people who never slept, worked three jobs, raised a family, climbed a mountain of bullshit excuses the rest of us would have laid down if we were them and planted their flag of success at the top.
They got that job, wrote that book, broke that record.
And, instead of just reveling in the wonder of their accomplishments, we make excuses for why that couldn't be us.
They had money. They had looks. They had opportunity. They had time.
No. They had passion. Commitment. Perseverance.
Perhaps I haven't found mine yet. But, that's no excuse to stop trying.
Well...maybe tomorrow.
