Head Over the River and Through the Woods to Celebrate the Arts!

Last year, I had the privilege of becoming a Tweet Seater for the Providence Performing Arts Center.  I get to attend certain shows in exchange for tweeting the experience live.  There are lots of good reasons for this, including promoting the arts and growing the audience for great theater productions.  PPAC has lots of incredible shows that attract a wide and diverse audience of theater lovers as well as niche fans who follow specific shows that are traveling across the US.

But, one need not travel ‘all the way to Providence’ to find great performances.  They are often tucked quietly in our own communities, sometimes performed by talented friends and colleagues.  Where I live in Bristol, we are close enough to enjoy several local productions and performances.

Jamestown, by RI standards, is an overnight destination from Bristol.  You have to cross a bridge to get there, and for whatever reason, this simple reality causes many to stay closer to home.  In a few days, however, my very precocious seven-year-old daughter and I will ‘pack a bag’ and head in that direction specifically to enjoy the theater.

A little background: my daughter loves all things Judy Blume. Ramona Quimby. Junie B. Jones. Ivy & Bean. Just Grace.  She loves strong female characters. (Hell, she was Hermione for Halloween.)  So, when I heard that DEAR EDWINA was coming to RI, I knew we had to go.

DEAR EDWINA is a heartwarming musical about the joys of growing up, brought to you by the creators of Junie B. Jones, The Musical.  The show's heroine, Edwina Spoonapple is an advice-giver extraordinaire, like a spunky, singing version of Dear Abby. Told through the show-within-a-show format, Edwina and her friends share wisdom on everything from trying new foods, to making new friends through clever, catchy and poignant songs.  It's "Glee" for kids, but adults will love it just as much as the children they bring.

Performances are as follows:

  Saturday, November 16 at 7:30pm
Sunday, November 17 at 4:00pm
Friday, November 22 at 7:30pm
   Saturday, November 23 at 7:30pm
 Sunday, November 24 at 4:00pm

All performances will be at The Jamestown Recreation Center located at 41 Conanicus Ave, Jamestown, R.I.  The Jamestown Community Theater encourages audiences to buy tickets early this season since prices are lower than usual.  Tickets can be purchased now in Jamestown at Baker's Pharmacy, Cathryn Jamieson Salon, The Conanicut Marine Store, and The Secret Garden. In Newport, tickets will be at Pleasant Surprise and in Wickford at Midnight Sun. Seniors (65 and older please) and children/students (18 and under) ticket prices will be $5.00 in advance; regular adult tickets will be $10.00. Both ticket prices will increase to $7.00 and $12.00 tickets if purchased at the door. For more information, people should call 401- 423-2121.  Follow the JCT on Facebook for more information.

Interested in joining us for a performance?  Syd and I are excited to have two tickets to the Sunday afternoon performance up for grabs - one adult and one child ticket.  All you have to do to enter is leave a comment below, telling us your favorite theatrical production.  Everything counts, from your own high school play performance, to a Broadway show.  Winners will be chosen on Friday morning and are selected at random…honestly, I use Random.org to generate the winner!

I received two tickets to Sunday's performance in exchange for letting you know about the show.  All other thoughts and opinions are, as always, entirely my own.
